Finances
Admission to the IMPRS-SHH is granted after a call for applications or on recommendation. In general, doctoral researchers receive three-year funding contracts (Max Planck Förderverträge) with the Max Planck Society or contracts for young researchers (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter) with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, or occasionally fellowships.
Fees
IMPRS-SHH doctoral researchers do not have to pay tuition fees for participating in this PhD program.
Applying for admission as a doctoral candidate with one of the “Fakultäten” of the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena (FSU) is free of charge.
The (optional) enrolment at FSU requires the payment of semester fees and includes various advantages.
Living costs
The average cost of living is around 800 EURO per month for doctoral candidates in Jena. 250-400 EURO of this is generally rent.
Accommodation
The International Office at MPI-GEA takes care for accommodation.
Health insurance
The immigration authorities require everyone to have adequate health insurance in Germany. Please note that you must have insurance coverage from your first day in Germany. For more information see Graduate Academy or contact the International Office at MPI-GEA.
Private liability insurance
We recommend obtaining private or civil liability insurance. For more information see this website by the Federal Government.
