Finances

Admission to the IMPRS-SHH is granted after a call for applications or on recommendation. In general, PhD students receive three-year funding contracts (Max Planck Förderverträge) with the Max Planck Society or contracts for young researchers (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter) with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, or occasionally fellowships.

Fees

IMPRS-SHH PhD students do not have to pay tuition fees for participating in this PhD program.

Applying for admission as a doctoral candidate with one of the “Fakultäten” of the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena (FSU) is free of charge.

The (optional) enrollment at FSU requires the payment of semester fees and includes various advantages.

Living costs

The average cost of living is around 800 EURO per month for doctoral candidates in Jena. 250-400 EURO of this is generally rent.

Accommodation

International doctoral candidates have the possibility of applying for a living space in one of the three guesthouses of FSU. Additionally, the Thuringian “Studierendenwerk” offers an online platform to find or announce accommodation offers. For more information see Accommodation or the Graduate Academy.

Health insurance

The immigration authorities require everyone to have adequate health insurance in Germany. Please note that you must have insurance coverage from your first day in Germany. For more information see Graduate Academy or contact us.
