Applications for admission to the IMPRS for the Science of Human History can only be made in response to a call for applications, or in exceptional cases on recommendation. In all cases, the application is made online via a form.

The selection process is multi-stage:

  1. Pre-selection on the basis of hard criteria
  2. Video conference interviews
  3. Selection symposium with paper and up to three in-person-interviews

Typical criteria for the selection

  • a Master’s degree qualifying for admission as a PhD student (see Requirements)
  • an excellent academic background (BA thesis, Master’s thesis, posters, publications, etc.)
  • methodological knowledge
  • special knowledge, depending on the call
  • English language skills

In addition to these requirements, IMPRS candidates must possess these qualities:

  • scientific creativity
  • good verbal skills
  • good skills in scientific writing
  • good presentation skills
  • strong motivation and commitment
  • maturity, strong networking skills and holistic thinking

Successful applicants receive a Max Planck support contract, a contract with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena or a fellowship.
